Resisting the Urge

I blamed the OCD. That tiny malformation of genetics, passed gladly and unknowingly through generations, finally reaching its crescendo in the bloodstream of the twenty first century. It was the same type of gene that made me enjoy wearing little hats and shoes with cats on them. The anti-social gene. It had to be the fault of something. I blamed the OCD.

I checked the front door was locked and went upstairs into my room. I checked that I had set the alarm on my phone, and the alarm on my alarm clock for three minutes later… I always set them the same way. I didn’t want to be late for work, afterall. Then I lay down in bed and closed my eyes… and slowly… ever so slowly… drifted off to… had I checked the front door?!

Heart pounding I went downstairs to check. It was definitely locked. I went back upstairs. While I was there I checked my two alarms again, just in case. Then I went back to bed.

But did I lock the door, or did I just think I locked the door? Did I unlock it accidentally when I just went to check that I’d locked it, having already locked it the first time? I went downstairs to check again. No, still locked. Definitely still locked. Upstairs. The alarms. Still set. To bed. This time I knew for certain that everything was just fine.

But then Paranoia arrived on his mighty steed. He always arrives before Sleep… Sleep always gets stuck in traffic.

Did you set the alarm?

‘Yes, I set both of them.’

Did you actually set them though?

‘Yes, look… I’ve just checked again. They’re set. They’re both set.’

But… did you just accidentally turn them off when you checked them?

‘I don’t think so… I’ll just check. No, they’re both set.’

But did you just accidentally turn them off that time?

‘I’m pretty sure I didn’t, but just to be sure, I’ll just check again.’

Oh, so they’re set then?

‘Yes. I just did them.’

Good.

‘Good.’

… what about the front door?

‘Aaaarrrgh!’

Leaping out of bed, I raced down the stairs, but my hand stopped short of the door handle. This was madness. Oh, confounded obsession! The door was obviously going to be locked. My brain was just melting. I convinced myself that I wasn’t going to check the door. I backed away, my hand still outstretched towards the door… just be normal… do something normal… normal, normal, normal. Because going up the stairs backwards was normal. Panicking slightly at my momentary insanity, my mind reversed to my time in therapy: ‘Just do something else instead’. It was designed to take my mind off it. To ease the urge. Just do something else. It was the kind of thing murderers got told too: ‘Just do something else instead’. It was so obvious, so simple, so… universally nonchalant. It couldn’t possibly fail.

I tried going imaginary fishing. But it was dark and I never caught anything. I still wanted to check.

I tried drawing cartoon pictures of an octopus wearing a hat and going to the shops. But his hat fell off and it made me sad. I still wanted to check.

I tried eating 14 bags of Skittles to see if I could really taste the rainbow. But I just ended up vomiting in one of my shoes. I still wanted to check.

So then I tried cutting off my own head with a fork. Finally, something was working! I was laughing maniacally at my genius until I cut through my throat… then I only made some splurging noises. But finally, the urge had been resisted! The insanity had ended! I didn’t want to check anymore!

But I did need a doctor. Probably should have left the door open.

  1. I am sending this to a friend to see, but I cut out the first paragraph and shortened it. That first paragraph is too intellectual.

My latest paranoid delusion was that sleeping with my head close to the power outlet was going to cause something bad to happen (not sure what, maybe cancer or it would throw off the wiring of my brain, don’t know). So anyways, congrats on writing a post every neurotic person in the world can relate to!

  7. I do this all the time! I rehearse stuff in my head so much, I can’t tell the difference between whether I actually did it or just meant to.

The 14 bags of Skittles would have done the trick. I’d have fallen asleep sorting them in to little piles… green… orange… red ones are yucky so they go with purple… :)

I’m so excited! This is the first real fiction I’ve read on FP. Maybe because it wasn’t tagged as fiction? You’re my newest hero!

    1. Anne, I am EXACTLY the same! Sometimes I don’t know whether I’ve imagined that I’ve done something or if I’ve actually done it. This is why checklists help, although I always end up worrying about them too!

I have spent many a day organising jelly beans into colour order so I could put them in my jelly bean machine. This is why I don’t have one anymore… although I still like organising sweets into colour order before I eat them! The madness and delicousness of it all.

And I know right! Everything I write is always part reality, part falsity, so I was genuinely very suprised (and elated) to have been FP’d as I have never seen any fiction on the front page either. The fiction revolution is nigh! Huzzah! :D

Sometimes I wonder if it’s a little OCD or am I just forgetful? I’ve seen a guy check his store to make sure it was locked, about ten or more times a night.

It’s not been diagnosed as far as I can tell. But I do believe it was put there either by generations of screwball DNA or some idiot I dated long ago. Never the less, the locks, the alarms, the skittles; I can totally relate. In my world, it’s people, logistics and nagging thoughts about the things I know I can’t change. Stress kills. I have resigned my self to the fact that if the door is unlocked, or iron left on or alarm not set, the Earth as I know it will not cease to exist. It has always continued no matter the outcome of the day. Nothing burned down, nothing stolen. I can be OCD-ish about things, but I simply pull out one of the MILLION things Iliek to think about and voila! What unlocked door. But do no tlet me be out of the house with it unlocked or it is full on house search for the serial killer waiting inside. All closets, inder beds, in the showers, everywhere must be checked for that lurking murderer. Some places twice if I forget from one end of the house to another.

  41. You’ve got that sense of overwhelmedness (is there such a word?) really well in this. Congrats! :)

I usually leave the door locking to someone else so my OCD rarely gets to work on that one. It does get to work on whether or not I turned off the hob, but a couple of years ago I made a decision that I’ve manage to stick to, to check no more than three times.

I think the basis of OCD is three things: fear of death – which could come in some weird form from not having done the thing you think you haven’t done… if that makes any sense; fear of being proven wrong (to yourself); and self-disbelief. Crack those and you’ll probably crack OCD. Good luck. I’ve tried and mostly failed (apart from only checking the hob three times!) ;)

    Like

    1. That’s awesome about your hob news! :D I have OCPD with a little OCD thrown in there for good measure, so it’s not so much the fear of things if I don’t do them, rather my mind can’t settle if things aren’t ‘straight’. OCPD’s more a preoccupation with lists and schedules, but I definitely do have some OCD traits… checking things multiple times being one of the tells! But as frustrating as it is, I guess it makes us who we are. We’d all be boring if we only checked the hob the once.

  43. Nearly shmearly, this WAS flawless because aside from jamming a fork in my throat this is me down to a tee! I check my alarms on my phone several times because of the same reason. I have gone outside to check I locked my car door more than once too… Did I lock my car door?

    1. I don’t have a car, but I’m sure when I do it’ll be exactly the same. The worst thing about the front door is suddenly thinking about it when I get to work, and I’m like, ‘Shiiiit’. But when I get home, it’s always locked. It’s either that I’ve done it, or the robbers decided to lock up after they’d done. Either way, it’s always nice.

And thanks for the comment! :)

    2. I get it in the head that I’ve just ordered something for my bro for Christmas, but did I order one or did I accidentally order two aswell.

      I am a strange one.

      Thanks for the reply :P

    3. Yup, I’m the same way with my vehicle, but I have a remote yo press lock. I know it is locked when I press the lock button, or did someone else just press yheir lock button and mine is unlocked still because of some door not being shut all the way?
